Scientists at the Center for Vision, Automation & Control (VAC) teamed up with their partner Bombardier and developed an innovative technology to make urban traffic safer and to avoid accidents with trams. The driver assistance systems are already being used successfully in different cities such us Frankfurt am Main in Germany. The Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR) covers the story in a 10-minute television report.
This driver assistance system makes use of pioneering 3D camera technology developed by AIT. The cameras, so-called digital eyes, scan the streets far ahead. If they recognize obstacles on the rails, the assistive system reacts in a fraction of a second. It warns the driver or initiates the braking process. "We are proud that we can support drivers with our technology and that we can demonstrably reduce accidents," says Christian Zinner, head of the project at VAC, “the demand is increasing worldwide”. According to MDR, in Central Germany the trams will be equipped with the sensor technology from next year.
