Artificial intelligence (AI) is developing rapidly. It enables constant innovation in all sectors. These advances bring both benefits and challenges for our society. We are currently confronted with deepfakes in the audio sector in connection with disinformation. AI is used to imitate the voices of real people. The AI only needs small amounts of original audio material from the real voice to learn the voice pattern and then speak entire sentences in the same pitch. Recognising deepfakes is becoming increasingly difficult and experts predict that they will soon be indistinguishable from the original. ORF spoke about this with renowned AI experts, including Alexander Schindler, Thematic Coordinator at the Centre for Digital Safety & Security and Thorsten Behrens from the Austrian Institute for Applied Telecommunications (OIAT).
