Airborne support for first responders

20.11.2023
AIT Center for Vision, Automation & Control successfully presents its research in the field of automated aviation at Austrian National Day

Following the invitation of the Austrian Armed Forces, the research group Assistive & Autonomous Systems/ AIT Center for Vision, Automation & Control presented its research cooperation in the field of automated aviation on the occasion of the Austrian National Day on October 25th and 26th. The focus was on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which provide common operational pictures in real-time. In the event of a disaster, they provide first responders with valuable information and thus support optimized rescue operations.

Every second counts

In disasters and emergencies, every second counts to save lives, treat the injured and minimize damage. First responders on the scene need accurate information about the current situation. Automated unmanned aerial vehicles can provide this information in real time. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are used individually or in swarms. Developments in autonomy, advanced sensor technologies and artificial intelligence enable them to perform complex missions autonomously and to respond to unexpected situations. Advances in flight control and navigation, sensor technology to accurately collect environmental data, and artificial intelligence to reliably interpret this data are enabling UAVs to operate more accurately and safely in challenging and unknown environments. As a result, UAVs can detect obstacles, avoid collisions, and create precise aerial maps. This allows emergency services to quickly assess the situation and deploy resources efficiently. All this makes UAVs indispensable helpers from the air.

More than 1500 visitors at the AIT booth

For the first time, the Austrian Armed Forces presented its research cooperation with various Austrian research institutions. The scientific partners were represented in their own tent "Am Hof" and attracted many visitors. K. Tanner, Federal Minister of Defense, and M. Polaschek, Federal Minister of Education, Science and Research, also visited the event and informed themselves about the joint work. At the AIT booth, they emphasized the importance of this interdisciplinary cooperation and praised the long-standing successful collaboration with the AIT as a reliable and innovative partner.

It was particularly pleasing that many young people were interested in the work of the AIT and asked about training and job opportunities.
