Decoding the 3D world: How Spatial Sensing and AI are Revolutionizing Robotics

09.10.2023
Csaba Beleznai represents AIT at the AI for Data & Construction 2023 conference of the construction industry

Csaba Beleznai is a scientist at the Center for Vision, Automation & Control at the AIT Austrian Institute of Technologyand an expert in the field of machine learning. In the Assistive & Autonomous Systems research group, he develops innovative solutions to automate working machines such as forklifts, excavators, tractors and others. These solutions give the machines the ability to recognise their environment and reliably perform the tasks assigned to them. The basis for this is reliable visual environment perception combined with artificial intelligence. They enable autonomous systems to navigate from one point to another, perform tasks and interact with their environment. The underlying idea is to take over dangerous or monotonous work from humans and support them in difficult working environments.

Vision-based perception is a key enabling technology when attempting to convert human work processes into automated robotic workflows in diverse construction, transport, and production scenarios. Automation of such workflows, however, faces several challenges. Required robotic skills such as navigation and object manipulation might seem trivial to a human, however, automating these tasks within diverse 3D spaces and over time is still in the focus of today’s research.

In his presentation, Beleznai discusses challenges and AIT approaches to solutions demonstrating how robots equipped with spatial awareness and AI can navigate, act, and interact to execute useful tasks even in demanding environments.

The DataCon.AI is a conference for Artificial Intelligence in the construction industry in German-speaking countries. Here, leading construction companies present concrete applications of intelligent software along the entire value chain, from real-time recognition of construction equipment to automatic detection and classification of defects. Leading experts will discuss the interplay between the traditional trade and one of the most powerful innovations of the modern era.
