AIT Mobility Observation Box nominated for ERSC Award

13.09.2023

Great success for the AIT road safety team: The Mobility Observation Box, an AI-based system for recording and objectively assessing traffic infrastructure and conflict situations, has been nominated for the prestigious Excellence in Road Safety Award of the European Road Safety Charter (ERSC) in the category "Data". The award ceremony will take place on October 19 in Brussels; AIT will be represented by Anna Huditz and Paul Rosenkranz from the Center for Low-Emission Transport.

About the European Road Safety Charter

The ERSC is a European Union initiative dedicated to promoting road safety in Europe since its inception in 2004. Its main goal is to reduce the number of road accidents and make Europe's roads safer. With more than 4,000 members, including public institutions, companies, educational institutions and NGOs, who commit to taking concrete action to improve road safety, the European Road Safety Charter is helping to make Europe's road network safer for all road users.

About the AIT Mobility Observation Box

Road safety depends to a large extent on the interaction of road users with each other and with the road infrastructure. The Mobility Observation Box developed by AIT makes it possible to measure the safety of traffic infrastructures according to objective criteria and thus make them comparable. After data acquisition, machine learning is used to automatically recognize and classify different groups of road users (pedestrians, cyclists, cars, trucks, e-scooters, etc.), evaluate their traffic behavior and create a basis for targeted improvement measures. Currently, the Mobility Observation Box is used in the European projects AMIGOS and Augmented CCAM, among others.
