So that the computer doesn't mistake a Chihuahua for a muffin

31.05.2023
AIT Lukas Bednar explains how computers learn to see at the Pint of Science Festival

Lukas Bednar, scientist in the research group High-Performance Vision Systems/ Center for Vision, Automation & Control, represented the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology at the Pint of Science Festival in Vienna, 22 -24 May 2023. As an expert in the field of image processing and machine learning, he was invited by the organiser to speak at the public event about Computers, Images & Artificial Intelligence..

How computers learn to see

"In recent years, computers have surpassed human performance in many disciplines. However, the recognition of image details by artificial intelligence is still often a difficult task. It can happen that a computer mistakes a Chihuahua for a muffin," says Lukas Bednar.

In his talk, he covers everything from human understanding of a scene - based on experience such as distinguishing between an object and a living being, spatial understanding or recognising and interpreting object shapes - to machine vision and how algorithms learn to distinguish cracks from dirt. He also discusses the Inline Computational Imaging (ICI) technology developed at AIT, which is used for quality inspection in manufacturing processes. It uses the natural transport motion of the object for simultaneous 2D and 3D surface detection under different viewing and illumination directions, mimicking human inspection such as tilting the object and changing the viewing perspective. In this way, even the most subtle changes to the surface are detected and evaluated using intelligent algorithms.

A toast to science

Under this motto the PINT of Science Festival invites researchers to share their latest findings with local guests in a relaxed atmosphere over food and drink. The festival takes place every year on three evenings in May in 26 countries around the world. In Austria, from 22 to 24 May, lectures on various scientific topics were held in a variety of pubs in the cities of Graz, Innsbruck, Salzburg and Vienna.
