The extensive digitization in our society and economy and the emerging challenges in many areas of life require new technological solutions for radio communication of the future. Maximum reliability and security, energy efficiency, use of distributed multiple antennas and effective use of the existing radio frequency spectrum are among the most important development goals.

At AIT, an internationally oriented research focus around the research group of AIT Principal Scientist Thomas Zemen was established in the Center for Digital Safety & Security. The aim is to develop new radio technologies for highly secure, reliable and energy-efficient radio-based communication systems - for the most modern industrial applications, new mobility concepts and efficient public transport, as well as for new applications in the smart city context and for the area of critical infrastructures.

The AIT can build on its successful research activities, with which the largest applied Austrian research institute has already taken on an international pioneering role - for example in the area of new wireless control processes for the cooperation of robots in industrial production (Industry 4.0), or in the field of cost-efficient ones Wireless security technology for branch lines to enable the use of CO2-neutral freight transport across the board.

Close cooperation and partnership with Ericsson Austria as a contribution to European digital sovereignty.

As a European key technology manufacturer and ICT market leader in Austria, Ericsson Austria is an ideal cooperation partner to jointly research technology topics at the transition from today's radio systems via 5G to the networks of the future and to develop an international leadership role.

Ericsson Austria, a leading global high-tech company in the digitization and telecommunications sector with 26,000 employees in development and research, pursues the following four central pillars in its research strategy. Trustworthiness of the systems, sustainability through the efficiency of the technology, accelerated automation and digitization and unlimited connectivity. Among other things, Ericsson is a driving force behind the European 6G project REINDEER to develop and build a new intelligent Connect Compute platform that will be crucial for future 6G systems.

Ericsson Austria CEO Alexander Sysoev sees the upcoming collaboration with AIT “as a perfect addition to the company's ambitions to support Austrian society with the new generation of mobile networks and beyond. The high level of technological mastery and the sensitivity of the partner for relevant future issues will support us in realizing a communication platform that is made possible by the new generation of mobile networks and that makes the greatest possible contribution to an efficient, humane and sustainable society through omnipresent intelligent communication ".

Global pioneering role through leading research and digitization technology competence in Austria

"We have taken an international leading position in the research community in special radio technology areas such as highly reliable communication using distributed multiple antenna systems for fast moving vehicles and we are looking forward to a future-oriented technology cooperation with a globally leading digital company," says Thomas Zemen with conviction.

“The degree of complexity of today's ICT systems and the massive technological and social challenges in shaping our digital world require intensive cooperation between science and industry. With Ericsson Austria as a cooperation partner, we now have the opportunity to apply the innovative results of our application-oriented research at 5G and beyond and thus make an important contribution to European digital technology sovereignty, summarizes Helmut Leopold, Head of the Center for Digital Safety & Security at AIT, the goals of this collaboration.
