30.08.2021
The Competence Unit Bioresources organised workshops for children aged eight to twelve as part of the Kinder UNI Tulln 2021.

From Monday, 23 August, to Friday, 27 August, the Children's UNI Tulln offered the participating children, aged eight to twelve, lectures and workshops to marvel at and experiment with under the motto "Research Journeys - Discover Small Big Wide Worlds". AIT's Bioresources experts also took an active part again.

With exciting, age-appropriate and didactically diverse offers, the topics of plants, animals or microorganisms from other parts of the world were intended to spark the children's interest in research and education. Scientists and experts accompanied them through a varied programme.

The AIT also participated in the Children's UNI at GartenTulln with the Competence Unit Bioresources of the Center for Health & Bioresources with the workshop "The big world of little plant helpers - We can't live without plants, but can plants exist without other organisms?" Speaker Friederike Trognitz, plant researcher explained "Plants depend on their microbial partners to survive and defend themselves against biotic and abiotic stress factors. All plants are internally and externally colonised by microbial communities." Theresa Ringwald, Plant and Microbe Technician, who is also supporting the workshop, adds, "We want to look inside the plant and investigate how the plant interacts with a wide variety of microorganisms and how we can use that knowledge to produce healthy plants."

Ten other workshops were offered in the programme, where the children could learn about the work of scientists and get an insight into scientific careers. In addition, the young students were given plenty of opportunity to research, experiment and be creative. The highlight and conclusion of the programme was the graduation ceremony on Friday 27 August.
