Algorithm for calculating adaptive safety zones for people with limited orientation skills wins award

Erweiterung der Zone I+II und ausgelöster Alarm durch eine Grenzübertretung III

In the course of the AIT-led FreeWalker project, Klaus Dittrich, Research Engineer at the Center for Digital Safety and Security, wins the "Best Position Paper Award" with his algorithm for calculating adaptive safety zones for people with limited orientation.

One of the problems of people with dementia or Alzheimer's disease is the temporary disorientation in everyday life, which often comes to a dramatic end after hours of searching. The scientists in the Sensing and Vision Solutions Business Unit at the Center for Digital Safety and Security wanted to tackle this problem and were able to develop a new system in the FreeWalker project.

While current "geofencing" systems severely restrict the freedom of the user due to rigid zones, this approach was further developed in the FreeWalker project so that the zones adapt to the movement profile of the user over time and an alarm is still triggered in the event of sudden disorientation.

In addition, a feature has been integrated that enables users to also attend individual appointments in a specific time window outside the learned zones.
