How transformation towards a more sustainable city can succeed

25.11.2020
AIT develops a system to monitor JPI Urban Europe's contribution to Urban Transition

The transnational Joint Programming Initiative (JPI) Urban Europe has set itself the target of making urban living spaces more sustainable, resilient and liveable. For this transformation to succeed, initiatives in the areas of urban innovation and technological development are needed. JPI Urban Europe aims to be a hub for urban research in Europe and to facilitating research on a scale which simply could not be carried out by any one nation alone. To this end, there are ongoing transnational R&D calls and projects.

The AIT Center for Innovation Systems & Policy has now developed a concept for monitoring the various JPI Urban Europe projects and the entire initiative. The aim was to present the initiative's contribution to sustainable urban development and urban transition. Performance indicators were developed, an implementation plan for the monitoring system was created and a first pilot round was conducted. The results were presented by Susanne Meyer and Robert Hawlik (both Center for Innovation Systems & Policy) to the 20 participating European countries at the JPI Urban Europe on 24 November 2020.

The evidence-based presentation of the success of the JPI Urban Europe was an important element for the transfer of the JPI Urban Europe into the now planned Driving Urban Transitions Partnership in Horizon Europe.
