Novel optical sensing technology for healthier cooking

The quantitative detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is desirable for a wide range of applications, e.g. in the area of cooking. The detection of VOCs during cooking processes can help to reduce the formation of toxic organic byproducts and reduce the overall fat content of certain meals. To this end, the project „Integrated-optical detection of volatile organic compounds using functional polymer coatings (COLODOR)“ aims at the realization of a VOC sensor system, which will be integrated in a consumer cooking tool.

In particular, the project relates to the development of a novel optical multi parameter gas sensor concept using polymer embedded indicator dyes and CMOS compatible integrated optical devices. For the sensor chip new sensor materials and a local deposition technique are investigated. Optical waveguide based gas sensor chips will be designed and the function of the innovative gas sensing principle will be studied.

The project puts an emphasis on compatibility with cost-effective mass fabrication technologies to ensure a smooth transfer of the results to commercial products. This is reflected by the participation of three companies in charge of the photonic chip, the polymer deposition, and the validation of the sensing concept with respect to a cooking related target application.
