Successful Conclusion of the eWALL Project

01.01.2017

On 6 and 7 December 2016 the team of the Center for Technology Experience attended the European Summit on Digital Innovation for Active and Healthy Ageing in Brussels to present the final prototype of the eWALL smart home solution. 1.600 participants of the event were invited to explore the services provided by the system, primarily aimed at supporting people with chronic diseases in their everyday activities.

Over the last three years the eWALL solution was developed within an FP7 project together with 13 partners from ten European countries. The cloud-based system is integrated with various sensors, medical devices and an interactive touchscreen installed in the user's home, aiming at contributing to the independent living of persons with chronic diseases (e.g. COPD, MCI) or age-related restrictions. eWALL is designed to visualize various personal health indicators and information about home environment such as air quality. It further features individual physical and cognitive training as well as personalized health-related recommendations. Special attention was paid to motivational elements in order to foster long-term engagement with the services provided.

The last year of the project was dedicated to the evaluation of the acceptance, user experience and potential clinical effects of the system within a large-scale study in 48 households in Austria, Italy, the Netherlands and Denmark. Overall, the results underline the potential of the system to support users in their everyday activities, to foster healthy behaviour, and confirm the added value for the clinical practice.

After the official end of the project in October 2016, the eWALL system has now entered the phase of commercialisation. In order to enable synergies and future collaborations, the eWALL consortium decided to release its solution as open source. In addition, a joint exploitation plan was developed. Led by the exploitation partner Innovation Sprint, eWALL will now be further developed and made commercially available in 2017.
