Sustainable Energy – Production, Storage and Loading in the Polytechnic school of Klagenfurt, Carinthia, Austria

Location

The higher technical college of Klagenfurt (HTL Klagenfurt) in Southern Austria is the designated location for implementation of the E³@SCHOOL (fast) e-charging stations project. The school site is favorable for various reasons: being situated in the South-East of the city center, the school roofs are ideal for installing PV and so providing a direct source of electricity generation; the yield of that electricity generation is fed to a large-scale energy storage system and/or can be consumed by the school directly.  The large-scale storage is used as a primary energy source to supply electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure adjacent to the school, which is accessible to the public, and because of its proximity to the city center, makes for an attractive charging option.

AIT’s role

AIT’s role in this project is to ensure efficient load and energy management. To accomplish this, the AIT Center for Energy is developing a real-time energy management system (see conceptual representation in the figure) customized for the school campus, which will be deployed and validated in field demonstrations.

Methodology

The research engineers use innovative methods based on machine learning to obtain accurate forecasting of generation, load, and charging behavior, the data of which is also used for the optimization of the energy flows within the school campus, including the optimal utilization of the battery storage system and controlling the maximum power of the charging stations. In order to achieve the best possible grid efficiency and meet the user needs as defined in the energy flows, the charging requirements are optimally integrated into the AI-based load and the energy management of the building and its environment. Despite the impact of increasing dynamics and expected uncertainties in the load curve, the software ensures accuracy and correctness of the energy usage decisions.
