National Project
The substitution of old, fossil-fired boilers by modern fuel-fired heat pumps such as gas absorption heat pumps has an enormous CO2 reduction potential. This is especially true for retrofit applications. The aim of Annex 43 is to counteract market barriers in order to enable these ecologically sound systems to be used more widely. The state of the art and research is to be surveyed, CO2 saving potentials for heating different types of buildings are to be investigated via simulation and a monitoring of a system in the field is to be carried out. Furthermore, a market study will be prepared to show the potentials, chances and entry barriers for gas absorption heat pumps in Austria and market support measures will be elaborated. The results and findings will be integrated into the international project and passed on to Austrian stakeholders.

The project is being carried out as part of an IEA research cooperation on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology.
International project
The IEA HPP Annex 43 aims at the diffusion of sorption heat pumps in residential buildings and smaller commercial / industrial buildings or applications (<50kW). The application is primarily in the heating sector. Cooling is only considered as an additional function. The task contents include:
- Creation of an overview of the systems available on the market and their classification.
- Technology transfer
- Field measurements and performance evaluation
- Preparation of a market potential study and roadmap
- Development of recommendations for decision makers
- Information for decision makers, planners and installers
