Principal Scientist Winfried Neuhaus, Competence Unit Molecular Diagnostics at the Center for Health & Bioresources, explains in detail his work on the blood-brain barrier in "Medicine for the Brain" in the series "Krone der Wissenschaft".
Neuhaus has been researching biological barriers for 17 years, with a special focus on the blood-brain barrier and the blood-saliva barrier. The focus is on three questions: How do the transport mechanisms function? How does the barrier change during diseases? And which substances, that can be detected in blood or saliva, can be traced back to a disease? The article highlights the problem, that the majority of active substances developed for the brain, do not enter the brain and how new transport routes via the blood-brain barrier into the brain can be found.
