Intelligent components for active distribution networks

The continuous growth and integration of renewable energy in our grids demand innovative solutions. The iniGrid project, with AIT Austrian Institute of Technology in the lead, targets to develop and validate innovative sensor and actuator components for smart distribution grids.

At the Ars Electronica Festival the functionality of an active distribution network was demonstrated with an installation where single parameters could be changed by the visitors (e.g. wind gets stronger). The consequences of the changed parameters on the distribution network were simulated at the iniGrid Demonstrator. The so-called ‚Smart Breaker‘, and algorithms which were developed in the project helped to optimize the result.

The development of the ‘Smart Breaker’ is one of the core parts of the project. It consists of an intelligent switch for the low voltage grid which is integrating several functions in one device. This ‘Smart Breaker’ does not only allow dynamic management of line use as well as fault detection it can also perform measurements and exchange data with other devices – which opens completely novel opportunities for the energy management.
