From the lab to industrial implementation

AIT scientists are pursuing a holistic research and development approach to improve the key performance indicators of batteries and their integration into vehicles. The development process spans the entire value chain - from the synthesis of new battery materials to electrodes and cell production, battery testing, diagnostics and simulation all the way through to post mortem analysis.

Industrial prototyping of pouch cells

The state-of-the-art equipment in the AIT Battery Materials Laboratory enables comprehensive research into battery materials through accredited analysis and testing methods. The research focus here is on the development of high-performance electrode materials, optimisation of current cell chemistries as well as on the development of post-Lithium chemistries. At the AIT Battery Test Laboratory a variety of tests is carried out – from electrical, through calender and cycle ageing up to safety and customized tests.

"AIT is one of the few institutions worldwide to cover the entire battery research and production value chain. With our dry room and the state-of-the-art research pilot facility we can prototype lithium ion pouch cells with a focus on industrially relevant production. This bridges the gap between science and market application", explains Dr. Marcus Jahn, Battery researcher at AIT.
