Structural evaluation of asphalt roads at project level
The status analysis and structural maintenance of asphalt roads is currently regulated in RVS* 13.01.18 (1996). This RVS is to be revised in the course of the revision of RVS 13.01.41 (“Structural Road Maintenance - Asphalt Pavements - Basics for Status and Measure Assessment”) and incorporated into it. In practice, the procedures at project level vary greatly with regard to the type and scope of investigations and their evaluation and documentation. Although the relevant guidelines provide a catalogue of investigation measures and assessment criteria, these are applied differently depending on the level of knowledge and possibilities. Based on the valid guidelines and taking into account the specific requirements of the ASFiNAG network, a standardised procedure and documentation for the condition analysis and structural maintenance of asphalt roads should be developed depending on the damage pattern. The aim is to achieve a uniform evaluation of the road substance in order to determine the technically optimal structural maintenance measure, taking into account economic efficiency.
In the course of the project, a uniform evaluation method for the structural road substance as properties or condition of the individual layers and their interaction as a complete roadway construction with the subsoil/structure in the form of a characteristic value (structural lifetime) has been worked out. The research results shall subsequently form a basis for the elaboration of a new RVS for the structural evaluation of asphalt roads at project level.
AIT was involved in the design of the methodology of the evaluation and the practical application of the process carried out on a maintenance project construction site on the A4 motorway.
