Scenarios for an effective transformation of digitization
Uncertainty surrounding the impact of advancing digitalisation on employment is high, as the increasing penetration of digital technologies into economics and social lives is about to trigger a long-term structural change that will leave hardly any area of professional, public or private life untouched.
In the context of this fundamental uncertainty, the present study, the first of its kind for Austria, examines 1) how employment could develop by 2030 in terms of employment status, qualification requirements and working patterns, and 2) what opportunities and challenges can be expected in relation to the labour market during this period. The cornerstones of the study's implementation were an analysis of the current scientific literature on employment effects of Industry 4.0, a statistical long-term analysis of the development of the Austrian labour market and interactions with over 70 stakeholders as part of industry-specific workshops, interviews and a strategy workshop. The results of this study provide scenarios for the possible effects of Industry 4.0 on employment and define approaches that make a successful transformation to Industry 4.0 possible.
