Creating the next generation of 3D simulation means for aircraft icing

ICE GENESIS will provide the European aeronautical industry with a validated new generation of 3D icing engineering tools (numerical simulation tools and upgraded test capabilities), addressing Appendix C, O and snow conditions, for safe, efficient, right first time, and cost effective design and certification of future regional, business and large aircraft, rotorcraft and engines.

The three main objectives of ICE GENESIS are:

  • Improve and validate existing 3D numerical tools to predict ice accretion in App C, App O and Snow conditions.
  • Upgrade and calibrate icing wind tunnels to allow reproduction of:
    • Supercooled Large Droplets (SLD) in FZDZ (Freezing drizzle) conditions.
    • Snow icing conditions
    • Additionally, to assess the potential of current icing wind tunnels to represent SLD in FZRA (Freezing rain) conditions.
  • Build a large-scale experimental database on representative 3D configurations to be used as a solid reference (“ground truth”) for future numerical tools validation.

By improving the understanding and modelling of icing conditions and providing numerical tools for the design and certification, ICE GENESIS will permit weather hazards to be more precisely evaluated and properly mitigated as per the EASP (European Aviation Safety Programme).
A consistent set of validated capabilities will be produced, covering all types of icing conditions and air vehicles. This will enable design of products that meet the safety objectives in all icing conditions along with the targeted impacts of reducing cost for certification, maintenance and power consumption.
