Online diagnostics for ageing, safety and reuse of lithium-ion batteries

  • Monitoring electrochemical processes under various operational conditions in Li-ion batteries.
  • Fast sample injector for GCMS to increase analytical accuracy at high charging rates.
  • Detailed LCA database ensures the evaluation of safety and performance critical parameters  as well as suitability for “second life” applications and/or recycling.

Production process

Project goal

The increased demand for energy storage –for electric mobility, but also in other domains– has put lithium-ion batteries in the focus of international R&D efforts that have led to advances in the improvement of the active materials. The goal of the DianaBatt project is to develop online diagnostics for ageing, safety and reuse of lithium-ion batteries. The data from this project can be used as the basis for making improvements to the electrolyte and/or the material or combination of materials on one hand, and evaluating the condition of the cell in order to be able to draw conclusions about its safety, lifetime, and toxicity on the other hand.

Main conclusions

  • Overcharging state of the art Li-Ion batteries yield in the evolution of up to 46 different gas species.
  • Decomposition of the inorganic parts of the electrolyte lead to a cascade of decomposition reactions effecting battery performance and safety.
  • Detailed LCA database ensures the evaluation of safety and performance critical parameters  as well as suitability for “second life” applications and/or recycling.
