Pelagios is an international Digital Humanities initiative that facilitates better linkages between online resources documenting the past, based on the places they refer to. Pelagios has been working with a growing network of partners towards connecting different types of online resources – the literature of different periods and languages, archaeological data and databases, maps and other images, the results of scholarly research, etc. – so that they become more easily discoverable and seamlessly navigable for users.

Pelagios developed best practices as well as technology: e.g. by establishing conventions for the publication of historical geospatial data  as Linked Open Data; or through our award winning open source software platforms Recogito, a document annotation platform which aids the process of linking digital texts and maps to the places they refer to; and Peripleo, a prototype visualization tool for navigating interconnected open data published by the Pelagios community.

The final project phase addressed the challenges of decentralization of both technology and community practices, by establishing a self-sustaining and self-governing community of practice in the form of the Pelagios Network association. In addition, further technical development and support aimed at groups such as teachers, lecturers, heritage management professionals and museum, library and archive curators were provided.
