Reliable wireless communication connections and low-latency localization and sensing methods are the “central nervous system” for the digitalization of many industrial sectors. The most important requirements here include secure operation and minimal energy consumption.
Reliable wireless communication systems increase operational safety and reduce the operating costs of public transport systems, e.g., by replacing wired safety systems with wireless connections and enabling increasingly automated operation of vehicles on the road, rail, and in the air. Furthermore, future manufacturing processes will use reliable wireless communication systems and localization methods to control human-robot and robot-robot interaction. These capabilities are key to a competitive Austrian business location with improved digital autonomy for modern industrial companies.
The Wireless Communication and Localization Research Group at AIT, led by Thomas Zemen, has extensive expertise in the areas of intelligent reconfigurable surfaces and distributed electromagnetic signal processing, wireless indoor localization, detection of outdoor objects, measurement of radio communication channels and their modeling with AI-based methods, FPGA design and programming for real-time radio signal processing.
