Evaluation of the reflection & absorption properties of noise barriers

The main objective of the project was to investigate the reflection properties of noise barriers in the near and far field. In this project, the connection between laboratory, near field and far field measurement methods as well as simulations for the description of the absorption behaviour of noise barriers were investigated, whereby the investigation of the first reflection and the multiple reflection were not part of the project. The results of the EN 1793-1 laboratory method were supplied by the manufacturers, while a separate test stand was set up to measure the in-situ properties. The measurements were carried out in accordance with CEN/TS 1793-5 and the method developed in the EU project QUIESST, which is expected to be incorporated into the future EN 1793-5. All single number data were calculated with the road traffic spectrum according to EN 1793-3 and the standardized rail traffic spectrum according to EN 16272-3-2.

The REFLEX research project was carried out on behalf of infrastructure operators (ASFINAG and ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG), two federal ministries (BMVIT and BMFLUW), five federal states (Tyrol, Vorarlberg, Styria, Upper Austria and Carinthia) and eight different manufacturers of noise barriers.
