Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) threats and risks are characterised by a rather low probability of occurrence with an extremely high potential impact. These threats are changing and evolving at a fast pace and in addition to the great variety of threat agents, means of delivery and targets make CBRN incidents and accidents particularly difficult to predict.
The European Defence Agency (EDA) has therefore awarded a framework contract for the next four years to a consortium of six core partners at the forefront of science and research in CBRN innovation. The consortium, called CBRN EUniversities, consists of SAFE Security and Freedom for Europe, University of Roma Tor Vergata, the Université Catholique de Louvain, Th European CBRN Center at Umea University, the Main School of Fire Service and the Austrian Institute of Technology, Center for Technology Experience. The Consortium is backed by 32 Supporting Partners, from 12 EU Member States and representing all type of Stakeholders active In the CBRN sector (training centres, first responders, practitioners, PPE providers, research centers).
The Center for Technology Experience can specifically contribute with its expertise in the area of training for critical tasks in virtual worlds. The focus here is on the design of future training possibilities and scenarios in the area of decision management under stress and the use of tangible interfaces in virtual systems (e.g. the use of a real Geiger counter in a virtual training simulation). Another area of expertise is the technological possibilities in the field of augmented humans. The central topic here is how technologies can expand the senses of humans and support them, especially in the critical CBRN environment. Possibilities such as a sensor-based danger display or warnings that communicate with people via tactile feedback or olfactory interfaces are conceivable. „We are pleased to be part of this great consortium and to be able to make our bundled know-how available. The focus is on the transfer of our innovative research knowledge into practical applications," says Markus Murtinger, Head of Competence Unit Experience Business Transformation, enthusiastically.
