Künstliche Intelligenz im Katastrophenschutz: Chancen und Herausforderungen im Fokus

13.10.2026

Artificial intelligence (AI) opens up new possibilities for crisis and disaster management. Whether analysing complex operational situations, prioritising emergency calls or supporting emergency services – intelligent technologies can help to process information more quickly and prepare more targeted decisions. At the same time, particularly in safety-critical situations, important questions arise regarding reliability, data protection and accountability.

In a recent episode of the ‘Wissenschaft im Einsatz’ podcast by the Disaster Competence Network Austria (DCNA), Alexander Schindler, Head of the AI Task Force at the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, Bernhard Bürger, an expert at the Centre for Digital Safety & Security and the Austrian Red Cross Lower Austria, and Wolfgang Eßl, Deputy Fire Chief of the Linz Professional Fire Brigade, discuss the potential and limitations of using AI in disaster management.

AI as support in critical situations

A key focus of the discussion is the question of how AI can support emergency services in managing complex and time-critical situations. A concrete example of its application is the prioritisation of numerous emergency calls coming in simultaneously. AI-based systems could help to quickly evaluate relevant information and identify particularly urgent cases at an early stage.

The experts also shed light on findings from previous research projects and discuss which technological possibilities already exist and where challenges remain. In particular, the quality and availability of data, as well as the responsible handling of sensitive information, play a central role.

Humans retain decision-making responsibility

Particularly in disaster management, where decisions can have a direct impact on human lives, trust, transparency and reliability are crucial. AI is intended to support emergency services and decision-makers, but not to take over their responsibility.

The podcast discussion thus also highlights the importance of collaboration between research and emergency response organisations. Through close cooperation, innovative technologies can be developed and tested in a practical manner and tailored to the actual requirements of crisis management.

Drawing on their expertise, the AIT experts demonstrate how artificial intelligence can contribute to more efficient, safer and sustainable disaster management.
