SUBLIME: Solid State Sulfide Based Li-Metal Batteries for EV Applications

24.07.2023
AIT is part of a top-class European consortium

The widespread global adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) is imperative to combat transport-related emissions, as the transport sector alone accounts for approximately a quarter of the EU's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Within this sector, road transport contributes to over two-thirds of the overall GHG emissions. Addressing these challenges, SUBLIME strives to foster a significant increase in EV adoption by tackling technical hurdles, particularly focusing on reducing the costs of EVs, enhancing their capabilities for long-distance travel, and advancing fast-charging technologies.

Central to the SUBLIME concept is the development of a comprehensive value chain, spanning from initial requirements to rigorous testing, for novel sulfide electrolyte-based solid-state battery cells with increased charge and energy densities.

Embracing cutting-edge high-capacity and high-voltage electrode materials, the proposed battery will inherently prioritize safety and will function effectively at room temperature or even lower, ensuring seamless vehicle operation across diverse environmental conditions.

The project will diligently work towards creating interfaces that enable rapid Li-ion transport, emphasizing the development of intimate and chemically stable interfaces with robust mechanical properties. These innovatively designed interfaces will bolster the stability of battery components, leveraging the sulfide's malleable nature to achieve optimal interfacial contact.

As a result of SUBLIME's endeavors, the sulfide electrolyte solid-state battery technology is expected to reach Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6, paving the way for scalable and efficient large-volume commercial manufacturing. The project will also culminate in the formulation of a roadmap leading to 2030, propelling a formidable alliance of European partners towards successful market entry.

The AIT Austrian Institute of Technology plays a central role in SUBLIME. It is responsible for that scientific part of the project which includes the optimisation of cathode and solid electrolyte films for solid state cells, as well as the dissemination of the project results.

AIT battery researcher Artur Tron: "The SUBLIME project pursues the ambitious goal of making solid-state battery cells based on sulphide electrolytes usable for widespread use in the mobility sector. Our ambition is to support European battery producers in the sense of the Green Deal to make a decisive contribution on the way to emission-free and sustainable mobility."
