Dialogue and quality assurance for plus-energy neighbourhoods through digital twins of district heating models

DigitalTwin4PEDs is developing a quality assurance method for Plus Energy Districts (PEDs) through the use of digital twin models in the early planning and development phases. A central energy-based building model supports coordination between various stakeholders and serves as a basis for ensuring the planned energy performance in the later operational phase. The concept is being tested in several living labs and forms the basis for transferable business models for digital twins in neighbourhood development.

The implementation of PEDs requires long-term cooperation processes between building owners, planners and other urban stakeholders. Future neighbourhoods will need to integrate various renewable energy systems in order to achieve a positive energy balance. Preliminary studies have shown that a trustworthy mediator is needed to balance different interests. Digital energy twins provide the necessary data and decision-making basis for this. DigitalTwin4PEDs is developing a systematic approach for their use in quality assurance in PED processes.

PROJECT AIMS

  • Development of a method for quality assurance of PEDs based on digital twins
  • Use of digital energy twins in early design phases to support decision-making processes
  • Provision of a central digital energy model for planning, design and analysis
  • Application and validation of the QA concept in several international living labs
  • Development of a business model for digital twins in neighbourhood development
  • Transferability of the approach to other urban development projects
