Vehicle-to-Grid Operations for Optimised Austrian Logistics

The flagship project V2GOAL develops and demonstrates solutions for integrating electric logistics fleets into the energy system through bidirectional charging (Vehicle-to-Grid, V2G). The project moves beyond conventional smart charging by using vehicle batteries as active energy storage assets and jointly optimizing logistics operations, charging processes and flexibility provision to energy markets.

At the core of V2GOAL is an Integrated Mobility & Energy Management System that combines operational requirements such as departure times, delivery windows and vehicle availability with electricity prices, grid constraints and market signals. The developed solutions are validated under real operating conditions at four complementary demonstration sites covering freight logistics, public transport, site-based fleets and parcel logistics.

Project goals

V2GOAL develops an integrated approach for the technical and economic use of V2G in commercial vehicle fleets. The project combines logistics optimization, energy management, interoperable charging infrastructure, laboratory validation and real-world demonstrations.

The project aims to demonstrate the flexibility potential of commercial electric fleets, develop integrated strategies for logistics and energy optimization, validate interoperable V2G solutions based on standards such as ISO 15118-20 and OCPP 2.1 and assess their economic and grid impacts. Based on the results from simulation and real-world operation, scalable business models, billing concepts and regulatory recommendations for a broader deployment of V2G in the logistics sector are developed.

Rolle des AIT

Project Coordination: AIT coordinates the overall project and consortium and is responsible for strategic project management, quality assurance and the coordination of activities across the different technical, economic and regulatory work packages.

Integrated Logistics and Energy Optimization: AIT develops models and optimization methods that jointly consider logistics operations and energy management. This includes the integration of V2G into fleet operations and the optimization logistic tasks, vehicle availability, charging and discharging processes as well as energy and grid costs.

V2G Laboratory Validation and Interoperability: AIT further develops its V2G testing environment at the SmartEST laboratory and validates bidirectional charging infrastructure under controlled conditions. The work includes interoperability, communication and control testing with a particular focus on ISO 15118-20 and OCPP 2.1.

Grid Simulation and System Impact Assessment: AIT develops simulation approaches to assess the effects of V2G operation on distribution grids, including grid loading, voltage conditions and potential congestion. The simulation results are used to identify grid-supporting charging and discharging strategies and to assess the scalability of V2G applications in future distribution grids.

Scientific Evaluation and Transfer to Real-World Operation: AIT links laboratory validation, simulation and demonstration activities and supports the evaluation of real-world operating data. This enables the development of transferable methods, reference models and recommendations for future V2G applications in commercial fleets.

Funding

V2GOAL is funded within the Zero Emission Mobility Plus 2025 programme through the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG). The project is implemented as a flagship project in the area of Vehicle-to-Grid demonstration.
