Digital solutions for environmental protection

The Environmental Analytics division addresses key challenges in the areas of climate, the environment, and sustainability. To this end, the AIT Center develops data-driven analytical methods that contribute to the implementation of the European Green Deal’s goals. The focus is on data fusion, physically informed machine learning, and explainable and trustworthy forecasting models. The fields of application range from climate change adaptation and sustainable agriculture and forestry to renewable energy and the circular economy.

Whether on a global scale or in specific contexts, when it comes to the environment and climate, the first step is to understand the current situation in order to evaluate various options for action based on that understanding. This applies to the ongoing monitoring of pollutants in the air or water, as well as the assessment and monitoring of measures and the modeling of future developments.

The solutions developed at AIT help states, decision-makers, and organizations analyze the current situation and plan future investments. Building on the AirDB platform for operating large sensor networks—developed by the Austrian research institute in collaboration with the company ADES—solutions are offered for monitoring a wide range of environmental parameters. In addition, AIT developed the EMIKAT platform for identifying emission sources as a basis for creating scenario models. This enables, for example, regulatory measures for climate adaptation to be modeled and objectively evaluated.

Smart Cities & Municipalities

Today, cities and municipalities need concrete digital tools to make well-informed decisions in the areas of adaptation to climate change, sustainable urban development, infrastructure planning and crisis prevention. The AIT Center for Digital Safety & Security develops practical solutions for this purpose that integrate data from various sources, present complex information in an understandable way and derive directly usable decision-making bases from that data. The systems developed are already being used in European projects and pilot regions and support cities in connecting fragmented data landscapes and planning strategic measures in a transparent manner.
