Strategic alliance between research and government secures international technology leadership and positions Austria as a pioneer in responsible technology development

The AIT Austrian Institute of Technology and the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI) are intensifying their long-standing cooperation with the aim of strengthening Austria's digital sovereignty in the long term. On February 26, 2026, they signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen strategic cooperation in the development of innovative technologies for improving public safety.

In a time of global technological power shifts and growing dependencies, the partnership deliberately focuses on a European counter-thesis: responsible, ethically sound technology development in close cooperation between cutting-edge research and regulatory practice. Structured cooperation between researchers and stakeholders is producing solutions that reconcile security aspects with social, legal, and ethical values—thereby securing the state's ability to act in the digital age in the long term. At the same time, controllable, leading-edge technologies “made in Austria” make a significant contribution to national security, cybersecurity, and the protection of democratic structures and institutions. The long-standing cooperation with the BMI has already produced significant results in numerous security-related research projects. AIT is one of the internationally recognized technology leaders in the field of digital identity management.
