We, the AIT Center for Vision, Automation & Control, are pleased to present the project “Testing of optical inspection method for the characterization of used solar modules for the purpose of reuse/repair/recycling” as part of the “Test Before Invest” initiative (german only). In collaboration with the Lower Austrian green tech start-up 2nd Cycle FlexCo, an innovative technology for the sustainable refurbishment of used PV modules is to be developed, with AIT taking on an advisory role between July and December 2024.
Aims of the project:
- Development of an automated optical inspection system for optical detection and defect recognition of PV modules.
- Extending the lifecycle of solar modules through efficient refurbishment.
- Promoting a circular economy in the solar industry.
Challenges:
- Automation of a human visual quality control process that has been in place to date.
- Integration of a high-precision inspection system into an upcycling facility.
- Use of modern algorithms and sensor technologies for reliable defect analysis.
Impact:
This project contributes to the reduction of electronic waste and the optimization of resources. It strengthens the sustainable use of PV modules and thus contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations.
