In the latest edition of “Mayrs Magazin” (ORF 2, November 21), ORF presented a method developed at the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology that allows bridges, roads, and railways to be monitored from space with millimeter precision—completely contactless and without local sensors.
The technology makes even minimal structural changes visible at an early stage, thus creating a sound basis for targeted maintenance measures. This reduces risks and extends the service life of existing infrastructure – an essential factor in view of the numerous structures from the 1960s and 1970s that are now facing extensive maintenance work.
AIT experts Alois Vorwagner, Maciej Kwapisz, Vazul Boros, and Philip Leopold explain how satellite-based monitoring methods work and what their benefits are.
