The newly launched EU co-funded research project NEEDS Repowered brings together six European cities to jointly develop innovative solutions against energy poverty and strengthen the resilience of Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) – urban neighborhoods that generate more renewable energy than they consume. Led by the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, Innsbruck, Karlsruhe, Kraków, Iași, Budaörs, and Helsingborg are working together on targeted measures for a secure and just energy future.
The project focuses on technological innovation, sustainable renovation strategies, new financing models, and inclusive participation formats. The aim is to create socially just, energy-efficient, and climate-resilient neighborhoods. Supported by 15 European partner organizations, the project emphasizes local implementation, knowledge sharing, and co-creation. A “Community of Practice” fosters exchange between cities and strengthens local innovation processes.
“The project addresses energy efficiency challenges by introducing technologies for building renovations, creating incentives for behavioral change, and developing sustainable financing models,” explains Project Lead Gudrun Haindlmaier, Senior Scientist at AIT.
NEEDS Repowered is part of the European Driving Urban Transitions Partnership and makes a key contribution to the development of future-proof urban energy systems.
