The largest international and scientific conference on heat pump technologies will take place from 26 to 29 May 2026 at the HOFBURG Vienna. It is a unique gathering place for international researchers, industry representatives, investors and political decision-makers. Ticket sales start on 8th July 2025.
The AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, in cooperation with the Technology Collaboration Programme on Heat Pumping Technologies of the International Energy Agency (HPT TCP by IEA), is organising the 15th IEA Heat Pump Conference 2026 in Vienna. Under the theme ‘Decarbonisation through Innovation’, it offers experts from research, industry, finance and politics a unique international platform for exchanging ideas on the latest developments and applications in the field of heat pump technologies. After 42 years, the conference is returning to Austria and will be the most important event of its kind in Europe in 2026.
Platform for innovation: science, technology and networking
At the heart of the conference will be the scientific programme which will feature for the first time ever a dynamic split between cutting-edge research and real-world applications, offering fresh perspectives and deeper insights based on papers submitted by leading experts in the field. Beyond the sessions, the conference will serve as a global hub for collaboration, bringing together academics, industry pioneers, investors and policymakers to exchange ideas on the latest technologies, market trends, policy developments, and standards shaping the future of sustainable heating and cooling.
"The 15th IEA Heat Pump Conference offers a unique discussion platform for scientific and application-oriented contributions with all relevant partners of the international heat pump network. This is because heat pump technologies will play a central role in the decarbonisation of buildings, industry and energy systems," emphasises Thomas Fleckl, Chairman of the National Organising Committee and Head of the Department of Sustainable Thermal Energy Systems at the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology.
The topics will be covered in an appealing mix of different formats - from keynote speeches by internationally renowned speakers to established formats of scientific presentations, visits to current demo projects, the new format of the policy forum for topical discussions in addition to the exclusive gala dinner and visit to a wine tavern for professional and personal networking.

Heat pump technologies: key to decarbonisation and drivers of innovation for new fields of application
Heat pumps are among the key technologies for the decarbonisation of buildings, industry and energy systems. Thanks to their high efficiency and the use of renewable environmental heat or waste heat, they make a decisive contribution to reducing CO₂ emissions in the heating and cooling sector - an area that is responsible for a significant proportion of final energy consumption worldwide.
However, to unlock their full potential continued technological advancements are being developed in many ways. Key areas include their deployment in high-temperature industrial processes, for grid-integrated solutions to provide flexibility in smart energy networks or for adaptation in densely populated urban areas. Nonetheless, challenges regarding recyclability, digitalisation and system integration are also increasingly being addressed through innovation. As such, the ongoing evolution and widespread adoption of heat pump solutions represent a cornerstone for achieving a successful, cross-sectoral energy transition.
About the 15th IEA Heat Pump Conference
This unique international conference has been held every three years since 1984. The upcoming conference will be Europe's leading event where industry, researchers, investors and policy makers will discuss the latest advances in the field of heat pumps. The conference programme is designed by the Scientific Committee of the conference, consisting of representatives from the National Organising Committee (NOC), International Organising Committee (IOC), the Heat Pump Centre, the Regional Coordinators and the Scientific Advisors and approved by the International Organising Committee (IOC). The chair of the National Organizing Committee is Dr. Thomas Fleckl, AIT Austrian Institute of Technology. https://hpc2026.org/
