Since 6 September 2025, the daily newspaper “Die Presse” has been presenting the five nominees for the “Austrian of the Year 2025” award. In the Research category, Angela Sessitsch, Head of Center Health & Bioresources at AIT, is listed. First, readers select the top three; the final decision is then made by a jury. The award ceremony is scheduled for 23 October 2025 at the Wiener Sofiensäle.
Microbiomes: the invisible foundation of food production
Angela Sessitsch has been researching the plant microbiome for many years, with a focus on crops. The focus is on microbial communities that increase nutrient efficiency, strengthen stress resilience and promote plant health—with the aim of reducing the use of fertilizers and plant protection products and securing yields more sustainably. For years she has repeatedly been listed among the most-cited researchers in her field (including as a “Highly Cited Researcher”) and helps shape the international discussion as a co-organizer of the miCROPe series (“Microbe-assisted crop production”), which links science and practice. “I see the nomination as recognition of a long-term team effort. What matters is communicating findings in an accessible way—especially where knowledge about microbiomes enables concrete solutions for agriculture,” explains Angela Sessitsch, Head of Center Health & Bioresources.
