AMIGOS: New approaches for safe and sustainable urban mobility

How can cities be made safer and more climate-friendly? This is being investigated by the EU project AMIGOS, in which 28 partners are involved - including the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology. AIT expert Isabela Erdelean explains: “More safety promotes active mobility such as walking or cycling - and that reduces emissions.”

The AIT-developed Mobility Observation Box (MOB) is at the project's core. It uses sensors and AI to detect critical traffic situations such as near-miss accidents. “This allows hazards to be identified and mitigated at an early stage,” says Erdelean. The system is complemented by an app and urban environmental data, which are combined on a big data platform.

The system is being tested in five cities, including Hamburg and Istanbul. Initial measures, such as new buses and intelligent traffic lights, are already in operation. The next step is to implement proven solutions in other European cities. Erdelean is convinced: “Reliable data is the key to sustainable urban development.”
