The study on the secure and privacy-compliant use of vehicle data, led by the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, was presented by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) at the World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP.29) of the United Nations (UNECE).
The study is publicly available: https://unece.org/transport/documents/2025/11/informal-documents/fia-stocktaking-offboard-and-onboard-authorisation-0
On behalf of the FIA, the AIT, led by the team of Christoph Schmittner, Senior Research Engineer at the Center for Digital Safety & Security, together with the Research Institute and JOANNEUM RESEARCH, conducted a comprehensive analysis of current technical and regulatory approaches for offboard and onboard authorization systems.
The aim of the study was to gain an overview of existing solutions and international developments that enable secure and data protection-compliant access to vehicle data.
The study is part of a long-term FIA initiative aimed at promoting global dialogue on access to, use of, and control over vehicle data. The focus is on striking a balance between cybersecurity, data protection, public interest, and private control. With this study, AIT is once again positioning itself as a leading partner in the field of secure vehicle and data architectures and is actively contributing to the international discussion on a trustworthy, secure, and fair data economy in the mobility sector.
