AIT showcased pioneering solutions at Control 2025
The Control Trade Fair for quality assurance, which took place in Stuttgart from 6 to 9 May 2025, once again attracted an international audience of over 20,000 trade visitors from 70 countries and 500 exhibitors. The focus was on the growing importance of contactless optical processes in industrial quality assurance – a trend that the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology is helping to shape with its exhibits.
ici:microscopy – next-generation inline 3D microscopy
3D microscopy in production lines. The technology is based on the Inline Computational Imaging (ICI) platform developed by AIT and enables the inspection of the finest structures at high production speeds – up to 40 million 3D points per second.
Thanks to the combination of light field technology and photometry, ici:microscopy uses the natural transport movement of the test object to simultaneously capture images from different viewing and lighting angles. The resulting high-resolution 3D models and optimised texture images enable precise inline inspection of challenging geometries and surfaces – for example in electronics manufacturing, security printing or metallic microstructures.
Robotic inspection – flexible, scalable, automated
AIT also presented its new robotic inspection solution, which was developed specifically for the automated, contactless inspection of complex components. The system automatically determines the number of sensor positions and viewing angles required for an inspection task and optimises the robotic path at the same time. This results in minimal inspection times for the desired coverage of the test object. This means that even varied inspection tasks in small-batch production can be carried out efficiently - and in a time-optimised manner.
Positive response and in-depth technical discussions
The joint presentation as part of the Fraunhofer special exhibition attracted great interest from visitors and led to intensive technical discussions. ‘Control is an ideal platform for us to present technological innovations with high industrial relevance,’ emphasised Markus Clabian, head of the High-Performance Vision Systems research group at AIT. ‘In particular, the contactless high-speed 3D detection in the µm range and robotic automation were perceived by trade visitors as groundbreaking for the future of quality assurance.’
