AIT as a pioneer in data collection for transport infrastructure

13.10.2025

As part of the Horizon Europe-funded CAMBER project, the AIT team conducted a comprehensive data collection campaign in the last week of September to assess the condition of road infrastructure in Croatia. The high-performance RoadLab measurement vehicle and the sensor-based MoProVe (Motorcycle Probe Vehicle) measurement system were used for this purpose.

During two intensive days of operation, precise reference data on road geometry and the location of infrastructure elements was collected on selected sections of the Croatian national road network, including information on transverse and longitudinal levelness, slope, longitudinal profile, and surface condition. In addition, motorcycle driving dynamics data, such as trajectory and acceleration data, were recorded. The survey was conducted in close cooperation with project partners from the University of Zagreb (FPZ) and the Croatian Road Administration.

The collected data form a central basis for the development of digital twins of the road network. These digital representations enable the simulation of different usage scenarios, improve the efficiency of maintenance planning, and contribute significantly to increasing road safety.

Further data collection campaigns will follow in Trikala (Greece), Cascais (Portugal), and South Holland (Netherlands) in 2026.

CAMBER: Safe and sustainable road maintenance through innovative technologies

The aim of the European research project CAMBER (Connected and Adaptive Maintenance for Safer Urban and Secondary Roads) is to improve the safety and maintenance of roads in urban and rural areas through the use of innovative technologies and cost-effective solutions. The project is supported by a consortium of 14 partners from nine countries, including leading research institutions, road authorities and industrial companies. The project is coordinated by the European Institute of Road Assessment (EIRA). Further info: https://www.ait.ac.at/en/research-topics/road-safety-accident-research/projects/camber
