VR training for paramedics with a gender perspective under AIT leadership

24.02.2025
The GAIN project, which was launched in autumn 2024, focuses on the development and research of gender- and diversity-sensitive anti-discrimination and empowerment training in virtual reality (VR) for emergency services personnel. In addition to the AIT Center for Technology Experience (management & coordination), Johanniter Austria and Usecon are involved as partners.

Emergency situations are not only medically challenging - paramedics often also have to deal with discrimination, aggression or hostility from onlookers, relatives or other people involved. VR training is intended to better prepare paramedics to be better equipped for such situations in the future and to be able to provide assistance efficiently at the same time. Virtual reality offers efficient learning options for optimal preparation through immersive and multi-sensory possibilities in the simulation.

Experts from gender- and diversity-sensitive research, the emergency services and digitalisation are setting new standards in training in the GAIN project.  The GAIN project team, led by Julia Himmelsbach (AIT Center for Technology Experience), is currently working on identifying the problem areas - a diary study and a longer-term online study will provide input on what paramedics are confronted with in their day-to-day work. This will provide the basis for the later VR scenarios and the training strategy. In the MED1stMR project, funded by the EU Horizon 2020 research and innovation program, the AIT and partners from all over Europe have already gathered extensive experience in the field of mixed reality training for paramedics (see photo).
