ORF reports on the SARA research project on bicycling skills

04.05.2026
AIT makes key contributions to improving cycling safety

The ORF programme “Bewusst gesund” featured the SARA research project – Safe Cycling at Any Age – which is funded by the Austrian Road Safety Fund (VSF). The report highlights current approaches to improving cycling skills and thereby enhancing road safety in the long term. Several experts from the fields of research and practice were interviewed, including road safety expert Michael Aleksa from the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology.

The AIT contributes its expertise particularly in the development and implementation of innovative measurement methods. The focus is on a specially developed skills course, which is used to test typical cycling situations under standardised conditions. This allows cycling skills to be objectively recorded and analysed.

The data obtained forms the basis for target group-specific training, awareness-raising measures and recommendations for a safe and user-friendly infrastructure. In this way, the AIT, together with the SARA project partners, is making a significant contribution to improving road safety for cyclists.
