Prof DI Dr Winfried Neuhaus has been appointed as a member of the Austrian Commission for Animal Experimentation. His commitment to the development of alternative methods to animal testing has made him a key figure in the 3Rs (Replace, Reduce, Refine) field. This appointment until 2028 marks an important step towards the further implementation of improved research practices in Austria.
Neuhaus brings a wealth of experience in the research and development of 3R methods that aim to develop more human-relevant alternatives to animal testing. His work has been recognised not only in Austria but also internationally. In his new role, Prof Neuhaus will help to monitor and improve guidelines and practices in relation to animal testing. Neuhaus on his new position: "It is a great honour and responsibility to take on this role. With my experience in the 3Rs, I hope to be able to contribute to the Commission on Animal Experimentation to ensure that the best methods are used for the respective research questions."
By appointing Prof Neuhaus to the commission, the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research is sending a strong signal in favour of progress in scientific research in compliance with ethical standards. Neuhaus' term of office until the end of 2028 promises to take into account innovative developments in the field of research methods that could reduce the use of animals in basic scientific experiments.

AIT Principal Scientist Winfried Neuhaus is an expert in biological barriers, Competence Unit Molecular Diagnostics of the AIT Center for Health and Bioresources, holds the first professorship in Austria for alternatives to animal testing (3Rs and NAMs) at the DPU Krems and is committed to 3Rs in many areas, for example as President of EUSAAT.
