For modern enterprises, the services of a Security Operation Center (SOC) are essential. An essential component of enterprise cybersecurity, a SOC ensures the integrity of corporate networks, systems and data. SOCs play an important role in identifying and responding to security incidents and threats, as well as proactively monitoring and analyzing network traffic to detect anomalies and vulnerabilities. The SOC is the nerve center for cybersecurity, where security analysts use advanced tools and techniques to monitor, analyze, and respond to security events to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of organizational resources.
In order to establish and operate a SOC internally in a company, or to purchase SOC services from external providers, employees with the necessary knowledge are required. In a workshop organized by Digital Factory Vorarlberg and AIT from April 26-28, 2023, 16 participants from 10 Vorarlberg companies were able to learn more about the basics of SOC. In addition to lectures and practical exercises on the structure and operation of a SOC as well as on tools and methods of threat detection, plans and procedures for cyber emergencies were developed. In an exercise on the AIT Cyber Range, a virtual environment for the hazard-free simulation of cyber attacks on companies and corporate networks, the participants were able to get an impression of what happens during a real cyber attack and put their emergency plans to a realistic test.
"We are very pleased that we were able to design this workshop together with the leading research center for cyber security in Austria and bring it to Vorarlberg," explains Dr. Robert Merz, Head of Research at Digital Factory Vorarlberg. "This will enable local businesses to develop the necessary skills and a more comprehensive understanding of how to protect their organizations from increasingly complex and sophisticated cyber threats."
The workshop is part of the cybersecurity focus of Digital Factory Vorarlberg, which aims to support competencies and state-of-the-art solutions for secure digitization of companies in Vorarlberg together with AIT.
