Development of a mobile air cleaner and disinfector

A project of the COVID-19 EIT Manufacturing response call

The virus SARS-Cov-2 is a new challenge for society. The main vector of spreading is assumed to be small droplet aerosols, which can stay airborne for a long time.
Responding to the challenges by the coronavirus SARS-Cov-2, the consortium of Technical University of Vienna (IFT), AIT Austrian Institute of Technology (HBR), HPM-Technologie and AQA GmbH created the idea of a mobile device functioning as air cleaner or disinfector, depending on the chosen mode.

Within the project the TU Wien is further developing an existing prototype for high volume air cleaning, whereas HPM-Technologies and the AIT are investigating the optimal combination of aerosol production technology, chosen disinfectant and application amount to ensure inactivation of different bacteria and virus. The AQA GmbH is providing insight into the market and elaborates a strategy to deploy the product.

The goal is to create a mobile solution, suitable for homes, doctors offices, offices, waiting rooms and many more. In operation of the device it is possible to switch between the filtration and the disinfection mode. The disinfection mode can be used to fumigate surfaces when no occupants are present.

With this innovative technology we combine two options to ensure reduced bacteria and virus loads in the indoor air and contribute to a healthy population.
