aggfa Operators Day 2026: Bernhard Schrenk outlines the future of fibre-optic networks

27.10.2026
Artificial intelligence, quantum communication and new network architectures took centre stage at the aggfa Operators Day 2026 on 20 October in Vienna

At this year’s CMG-AE aggfa Operators Day, experts from the fields of research, industry and the telecommunications sector discussed the future of network operations. The event, held at the Austrian Chamber of Commerce, was packed to capacity.

There was a particular focus on the prospects for quantum communication. Dr Bernhard Schrenk, Senior Scientist at the Centre for Digital Safety & Security, addressed photonic networks, quantum communication and future network architectures. These fields of research open up new possibilities for secure and high-performance data transmission and could have a significant impact on communication infrastructures in the coming decades.

Alongside these future technologies, the event also focused on specific challenges facing the sector: the use of artificial intelligence in network operations, the consolidation of fibre-optic networks, and fibre-optic sensing, in which fibre-optic cables are also used as sensors.

Operators Day thus highlighted that fibre-optic networks are far more than mere data lines. They form a central foundation for new digital applications and technologies – from intelligent network management to quantum communication.
