When designing structures, the calculation assumptions require safety factors to take into account the probability of failure. In reality, however, structures are characterized by stochastic influences over their life cycle. Probabilistic structural analyses in combination with degradation models offer new prognosis possibilities. To increase the efficiency of Monte Carlo simulations, new scientific approaches (e.g. Importance Sampling) have been implemented in the simulation tools developed by the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology.
