Shaping the European innovation strategy

AIT Expertise as the Foundation for the European Commission's Policy Paper

The European Commission relies on the expertise of AIT: Since October 2023, AIT experts have been working on key future topics in the energy sector as part of a project for the Energy Technology and Innovation Platform for Smart Energy Networks for the Energy Transition (ETIP SNET). ETIP SNET advises the European Commission on innovation strategies and current research topics.

One outstanding result of this collaboration is the policy paper “Bridging the Gap – From Innovation to Market”, authored by AIT experts and published on behalf of the European Commission. This paper analyzes the challenges research results face in moving from the development phase to market maturity and provides concrete recommendations to accelerate these processes.

Strategies for Bringing Innovative Technologies to Market

The policy paper is based on a combination of surveys among researchers and industrial companies, insights from AIT experts’ international networks, and an in-depth literature review. This comprehensive analysis formed the basis for key recommendations on how the European Commission can specifically support research and industry in bringing innovations to market. Examples include:

  • Implementation of Regulatory Sandboxes: Developing and testing specific frameworks to bring innovations to market more efficiently.
  • Promotion of High Technology Readiness Level (TRL) Projects: Targeted funding to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), in particular.
  • Creation of Matchmaking Platforms: Organizing events and platforms to strengthen knowledge exchange between industry and research.
