Advanced Quantum Communication

The Competence Unit Optical Quantum Technologies (OQT) operates at the forefront of next-generation quantum communication solutions. Our team leverages a state-of-the-art laboratory dedicated to quantum optics experiments, photonics, and opto-electronics, enabling cutting-edge research and prototype development in quantum communication technologies. Combined with broad expertise in software development, cryptography, and classical communication infrastructure, OQT supports the realization of scalable, high-security communication systems for critical applications.

In the area of Advanced Quantum Communication, we focus on pushing beyond the realm of standard QKD. One aspect of this are security protocols beyond QKD in the field of mistrustful or two-party cryptography – a class of protocols not requiring mutual trust between the parties involved. A prominent example is Oblivious Transfer which allows for secure data exchange between mistrustful parties.
In parallel, the unit advances methods for entanglement distribution as a key resource for next-generation quantum networks. Building on this, the team works on extending quantum communication beyond point-to-point links, contributing to the development of long-distance quantum networks through innovations in scalable QKD protocols and work towards quantum repeaters and a future quantum internet.
Through close collaboration with national and international industry and research partners, OQT contributes to building secure, future-proof communication protocols ensuring Austria’s position at the cutting edge of quantum technology innovation.
