The energy transition is a major social project. The necessary expansion of renewable energies also requires a shift from centralised to decentralised energy production. Social inclusion and participation - summarised under the term "energy democracy" - are essential for the successful implementation of ambitious climate protection targets.

With this in mind, the "b_part_of_transition" project is piloting socially innovative business and operating models for the energy transition in the industrial town of Kapfenberg. Kapfenberg has specific problem areas, potential and resources that need to be taken into account:

  • Workers' housing estates from the 1950s and 1960s in need of renovation with great potential for optimising the use of district heating.
  • Industrial operations that cause heavy traffic congestion, particularly at peak times, but also offer potential for the expansion of photovoltaics on previously unused roof areas.
  • An urban development area that is to be realised as a climate-friendly district.

When testing the models, "developments by citizens for citizens" are placed at the centre and city administration, industry, the public and research are brought together. AIT supports the research project in implementing the participatory measures. By establishing sociocratic organisational models, which are based on the tradition of self-organisation, sustainable structures (operating organisations) are to be created by the citizens themselves to initiate and embed sustainable behavioral changes and business models.
